While in some ways something is lost with every place being fairly similar, my sister and I discussed how it can also be comforting. No matter where you are in the U.S., you know that you can pick up a cheap but cute shirt at Old Navy, almost any kind of candy or marker at Target, and household stuff at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
In Germany, there are many things I would have no idea where to find. Like a white-erase marker. And while those things are available somewhere, the main stores don't carry a wide variety of things nor brands of those things they do have. But you do get more of the more unique, personality-filled, smaller stores.

As you say, in Europe if you want a specifict item you must go to an specifict shop. That's how it works here he he he. If you try, for example, to buy a videogame, a painting or even jeans on a traditional shop... you will pay the difference ;)
This is an interesting topic. Although it may be convenient to know where to shop anywhere in America - it is only a short-term (rarely used) convenience used when you are out of town. Community interaction is lost in the corporate shopping world. To go further, no one is really a grocer in Utah unless they own a grocery store - and to tie it in with your previous post. .. they may not know very much about produce and the items they offer whereas a specified shop owner may. Also, going to target to buy a pen can be overwhelming if you don't know exactly what type of pen you would like - Americans have unncessary plethora of options, contributing to an already frightening consumerist culture. But that's my rant for right now. When it comes to paying more for the pen at a private store ask me again. ;)
I think thats too nice thanks...

And Hungary is even worse than Germany... :) You wouldn't believe it! :) But I kind of like how you can walk in any store and have a complete surprise of what kind of shoes, candies, clothes, etc. you can buy there. :) But that makes you unique because not too many people will walk around in the same shoes as you are. :)
